How are the roller window shades removed?  The valance blocks where the roller assembly is attached, and I can't figure out how to remove it without breaking something.

Hard to explain, but when 2 fell down I learned.
Easiest way to learn is to go a hardware or drapery store and see how roller shades are clipped in place. 
Maybe there are Google videos.

You have to pop the plastic caps off the end of the valance. There's two plastic clips in the front and one in the back of the cap. Once the caps are off it's pretty straight forward. If you're trying to increase the tension of the roller retrieve just push the black plastic plug on the end of the roller in and turn it whichever direction increases the resistance. Be careful when you push the plug in that it doesn't uncoil the spring tension, it helps to use a stubby flathead screwdriver so this doesn't happen.
