Title: Bike racks
Post by: robertr on May 10, 2019, 12:43:41 pm
Hi Everyone, we're wanting to carry 2 bikes on the 2" receiver on the back of our 2019 Wonder. Is anyone currently carrying 2 bikes on a rack that can recommend a good rack to purchase? I've done searches on Amazon but it appears that there are RV approved racks out there that can endure long trips. We have a eight week cross country trip coming up and would like something that will endure.

Thanks in advance
Bob

Hi Bob,

Although I've used hitch mounts on past motorhomes, I've yet to do that with my Unity.  eTrailer is a good site to check for racks, the hitch mounted ones are here: https://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-RV_and_Camper_Bike_Racks-sf-RV_Hitch_Rack.aspx

When I used them in the past the things to watch for are
1) Clearance to the rear of the motor home, my Unity rear cap does extend out a bit from the hitch, so you may need either a 4 bike rack or a hitch extender to get clearance as the last thing you want is to have the bikes rub on the coach.
2) If you have an rear access hatch, then a rack with a swing away / tilt down feature is really nice, otherwise you may find you have to remove the bikes and the rack to open the rear hatch.  You may not have to worry about that if you don't have rear hatch.
3) A cover, wow-o-wow will the bikes get dirty back there !

Be interested in what you end up choosing and how it works for you.

I have been looking at something like this for my new Wonder.

coffre – Komo Creation (http://komocreation.com/en/coffre/)

I purchased one last year for our Wonder. I like it a lot, solves storage problems. Big large doors, easy to load I think it is well made. The only downside is pricey.....and your a little longer.

I would really like to find something like the Komo that works for my recumbent tadpole trike (Ice Sprint model) but haven't seen anything that will work.

Nice bikes..... Could you use something like this:    Vertical YAKUPS brand RV Kayak carrier for bikes kayaks, paddleboards (https://www.rvkayakracks.com/)  Have the two front wheels on the base and the rear wheel standing up? Have a soft custom cover made for it?

Or find a welder that can make a special rack

I have been a biker for over 30 years and continue to bike.  Im 72 and still use a conventional carbon road bike.  My wife uses a Trek battery Verbe 3.  The best bike rack ever made is a Thule which I have used for over 20 years.  Dont cheap out on bike racks...or you'll end up paying for it.  Thule is the brand you want..with a 2" receiver.  You will need a short 2" extender to keep the bike out far enough from the back of your LT.
